What People Are Saying

The following are quotes from Dog Park supporters. These have been received via dog park surveys submitted and via email. Without individuals' permission, their names have been initialized.

Yes...there are some who have submitted comments that are not in favor. These will be posted and addressed...so stay tuned! We want to be fair!

L.T., S. Glens Falls (6/08) - "I lived in Tucson, AZ a few years ago. There was dog park there in town that had two separate fenced areas. One for large dogs and the other for small dogs. I feel that a dog park would be great for people to let their dogs run around. Many people do not have fenced in  yards and I think it's important for a dog to be able to run and interact with other dogs."

G. S., S. Glens Falls (6/08) - "I don't know alot about this, but as I'm actively involved with the Capital District Humane Association, maybe we could do some kind of combined effort!!! www.cdha.net."

J.D., Fort Ann (6/08) - "I'm 18 years old and lived in South Glens Falls for 17 years of my life. I just recently moved to Fort Ann but still attend South Glens Falls High School. I'm going to college as a photography major and think it would be great to be able to visit a dog park and take photos of locals and their dogs."

J. K., S. Glens Falls (6/08) - "Thank you for all you do on this valuable issue."

A. F., Queensbury (6/08) - "I just moved here a couple of months ago from the Atlanta GA area. Most of the towns down there have dogs parks that are open to the public (no fee). I used to bring my puppy (100lbs!) a few times a week. Not only does it tire out our pups it also teaches them how to behave around other dogs. I have been taught that a tired dog is a happy dog! I would love to have a dog park close by!
Thank you for your initiative."

A&C. B. Monroe, NY - "We currently live in Orange County but are moving to Moreau in August. We have a great dog park near us (in Thomas Bull Park, Orange County). We think it's a great idea."

D. M., Gansevoort - "I use a walker so any chance to offer exercise to my dog is more than welcome."

K. H., S. Glens Falls - "I think it's a great idea!"

S. O., S. Glens Falls - I think having a place where dogs can socialize is a great idea! Makes for a happier dog!"

Anonymous - "For users, if started, please no more building up something that has to be administered later on which raises taxes." (The Dog Park Committee agrees!!!)

D. R. & J. M., S. Glens Falls - "There's no where to bring  your dog to play. We would love this idea!"

D. E., S. Glens Falls - "I do not currently own a dog, but I hope to again at some future time. I completely support the dog park and it is only because of my work situation that I can not be more involved. I think this is a great idea. You have my complete support!!!"

E. H., S. Glens Falls - "We have three dogs and would love to be able to go to a dog park so that our dogs could play and be more socialized with other dogs. We currently attend the Glens Falls Kennel Club agility classes."

E. H., S. Glens Falls (different person from previous!) - "A few of my co-workers live in Saratoga & enjoy using the "dog park" with their dogs."

S. T., S. Glens Falls - "I do not have a dog, but I have family members who have and I know they would appreciate this kind of facility. I don't need to be contacted. I just wanted to lend my support."

O. & J. P., S. Glens Falls - "Long overdue - This park will be widely used - Thank you. So many of our pets have no place to go if kept on a leash. I'm sure a humane person would not always be put out on a leash or tied up.

F. & M. D., S. Glens Falls - "Provisions need to be made available so people can pick up after their dogs." (The Dog Park Committee whole-heartedly agrees!)

I. H. (non-dog owner)- "I have friends, family and neighbors who have dogs. I know it would benefit those who own dogs. Any change would be payable by those people who own dogs." (The Dog Park Committee says absolutely!!)

M. M., S. Glens Falls - "Wonderful for dogs. Good plan."

H. M. (non-dog owner) - "I think this is a great idea. Much better than using my front yard!!" (With or without a dog park, the Dog Park Committee supports responsible dog ownership, respecting personal property and picking-up after your dog!!)

J. F., S. Glens Falls - "The concept sounds good. How would it be policed? Dogs should have their shots & be otherwise safe." (The Dog Park Committee agrees!!!. All users must be registered and present proof of vaccinations.)

R. G., Fort Edward - "Although my dog is very old and remains on my large property I still would support such a program."

L. C., S. Glens Falls - "This is a great idea for pet owners that do not have backyards. Animals need to exercise and socialize."

C. G., S. Glens Falls - "I think it would be great to exercise the dogs."

D. H. S, Glens Falls - "My only thought of concern is who would be responsible for upkeep of the park and any litigation brought on by any unusual occurrences I.E. Dog fight or a dog bites a person." (These are valid concerns but details will be addressed by the Dog Park Committee and the Town once a location has been identified. The upkeep would be primarily the responsibility of those who use it. All dog parks that we have researched have some or all users "self-policing". Liability is the same as today. Dogs and people are together in the park today, but the difference is there is no safe, contained space for the dogs. It is difficult to explain the details of it all here...so come to a Volunteer Meeting to learn more! There are over 1000 dogs parks who have had the same initial concerns...)

P. S., S. Glens Falls - "It would be a great idea for a park. Places to walk dogs are getting fewer. It would be good too for dogs to socialize. Adults and kids have parks; why not dogs? They are our kids."

J. G., Fort Edward - "Would be a great asset to the community."

E. K., S. Glens Falls - "This would be such a plus for SGF. A great place for sociability w/people"

P. & K. D., S. Glens Falls - "A fully-fenced, off-leash dog park is just what this area needs. I feel that residents of Town of Moreau/Village of SGF should be able to purchase a permit sticker (similar to Town Dump sticker) that will allow access to the park (for no further fees until yearly renewal) throughout the year. Surrounding areas (GF, HF, Qsby, Saratoga, etc.) would be allowed to use the park on a daily fee basis, paid at an existing location (Town Hall, Village Hall, Town Garage, Moreau Red, etc.) to save paying an extra salary. Our residents could also be allowed to pay daily if their usage doesn't support a yearly permit fee."

L. L., S. Glens Falls - "Hopefully this dog park would keep dog wakers who don't curb their dogs out of our neighborhood." (The Dog Park Committee strongly supports responsible dog ownership and picking up after your dog. Our hope is that a dog park would help promote responsible dog ownership in our community.)

M. W., S. Glens Falls - "I would like to see 2 separated sections - one for big dogs - other for small dogs. Water available and plastic bags or a holder so people could bring bags and leave them."

B. & K. B. - "A great idea!"

A. & P. C., S. Glens Falls - "This is a wonderful idea and much needed! We love to walk along the beautiful Betar by-way & love the dog "bags" provided @ each entrance. Having a dog park is another great option - where our dogs can run off their leashes! Than you to all involved for helping to get this to fruition!"

K. L., S. Glens Falls - "Dog parks in Cedar Park, Texas have ponds or broks runnight through them. It was busy everyday!!! One of the best dog parks I've ever visited. A fee for a visitor for the day was $10. Well worth the 3 days I used it. Even my kids had fun!"

J. V., S. Glens Falls - "I would love to have a place to bring my furry baby!"

J. K., Hudson Falls - "I am a big dog lover and I've been telling my boyfriend for  years that I wish we had a dog park here. We live in an apartment and we don't have a fenced in  yard so I feel sorry for my dog being only able to play on a run. My dog also doesn't have any dog friends and he is a very sweet, energetic, friendly dog so I'd love for him to make friends...We so desperately need a dog park in this area and I'm so  happy to see this happen."

M & C. S, Glens Falls- "As residents of Glens Falls, we are extremely close to Moreau and in fact travel often to the Park and other places in Moreau for sports and community events. We would love a dog park there, and to be able to use it as registered users, as opposed to having to pay a daily usage fee for not living in Moreau (as one writer suggested). We understand the responsibilities of dog ownership (including proper socialization, exercise and most importantly cleaning up!) as much as any other caring pet owner. We love the idea and would welcome ability to use and respect the dog park as if it were in our own neighborhood."

ML. M., SGF, - "When I was in Mass. last, they had a notice up in front of a pet shop advertising a dog show. The awards would be for characteristics that mutts could enter...It could be a fundraiser that every dog owner could show off their pet. I sounded like fun for the owners with mixed breeds to finally get to show off their dogs."

BA. M., Glens Falls - "I would pay a fee if it went back into keeping the park with the help of the people who use it. It must be understood by all users that they are responsible for their own dogs waste and to be able to realize if their dogs are too aggressive to be with other dogs. Is there an insurance you have to have for a park like this? I work over nights so I'm not very available to volunteer." (Insurance is carried by the Town for the  park.)

S. U., Saratoga - "Very interested in this. Have taken our dogs to the enclosed area in Ballston Spa several times and have told lots of pug owners about it. Also have gone to dog park in Saratoga but feel somewhat uncomfortable now with our dogs that it is not fenced-in area. I know lots of dog owners woho do not have fenced-in areas for their dogs to play and socialize and we would use this and tell members of our pug group to both use it and volunteer to help."

C.C, Saratoga - "I'm trying to get something going here in Saratoga so am interested in your process and wish you well. I'm not sure what I can do to help, but once a list is available of your needs, I'll try to find a way to be useful."

H. V., Porters Corners - "The fence should be 6 ft high at least....Check with the people who run the Normanskill dog park in Albany - Theirs is wonderful. I take my dogs there for a beagle meetup once a month. ...I can't wait to have a local place to bring my dogs."

Sherie Gritner, Porter Corners - "Dogs are pack animals, they need to socialize and run. Dogs learn at the parks and so do humans. We dog owners talk with each other, I have helped many people over the 4 plus years that I have been going to the Saratoga dog park. And I've learn a thing or two myself. New dog owners and even some old can learn tips on care and behavior. It is s o true!! Dogs need to socialize, they need to know how to behave with other dogs as well as meeting new people. I truly believe as time passes and more dogs have been socialized you will see less dog bites through out your town. I AM A STRONG SUPPORTER OF DOG PARKS...."

E.R., Queensbury - "My dog doesn't get alot of socialization because there is not other dog her size or energy level in the neighborhood. A dog park in our general area...would help her out a lot! I would bring her more often in the summer time than winter because of college, but would definitely bring her. I would feel sager if the people who bring their dogs have the "registered" so you guys know that they definitely have their shots and are safe enough to have running loose. I would be happy to register and pay a small fee for my dog to have free run in a dog park!...Separate areas for large and small dogs would be okay just in case owners were wary of letting their small dogs with larger dogs, but I don't think it should be a must."

A. H., Salem - "When I lived in FL I frequented the local dog park and it was an excellent community of responsible dog people."

S.T., Ballston Lake - "I AM A DOG TRAINER & WORK FOR PETSMART. I FEEL ALL COMMUNITIES SHOULD HAVE A PLACE THAT PEOPLE CAN BRING THEIR DOGS TO SOCIALIZE. IT NOT ONLY HELPS THE DOGS BUT ALSO BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER WITH A COMMON INTEREST. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PLACES IN UPSTATE THAT PEOPLE CAN VACATION & ENJOY THEIR DOGS."

A.R., Lake Luzerne - I love dog parks! I wish every community could have one, as it's a great opportunity for dogs to socialize and exercise with other dogs. A great resource for those of us with single dogs, and small or no yards. I work in Ballston Spa and often use area dog parks between Ballston Spa and Lake Luzerne." (emphasis added)

T.D., Cohoes - "I would like to get a dog park in the City of Cohoes and am not sure how to get to go about getting one started."

M.K., Porters Corners - "I think its a great idea to have more places for people to go with their pets."

J.Y., Malta - I frequently use the Saratoga Dog Park. The only complaint we have is that people do not clean up after their dogs. This is an absolute must as it is dirty, disease-spreading and bad for the environment. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to "police" the park to be sure people are cleaning up after their dogs. While bags and cans are in place, people don't seem to car. The park is a wonderful place for our dogs to socialize, play and exercise. I am afraid the City of Saratoga will take it away if people don't begin to take pride in it. Maybe a monthly clean up day would help. People could sign up for one day per season for a few hours to help. Maybe the people that volunteer to help could have the annual user fee waived."

R.N., S. Glens Falls - "I think the idea of a dog park is a wonderful proposal. As a resident of the Town of Moreau, I feel there is certainly a need for such a park. There are many thought that must explored in order to develop a park that serves the needs of the dog community, doesn't cost the non-dog residents any tax dollars and will be run by a governing body that will remain professional and open.  In my case, my retired wife and I "dog sit" for our son and daughter-in-law's dog from 6:00am until 5:00pm on weekdays....the park would be a welcome departure for those days when weather permits our outdoor activity....Even though I do not have a Town of Moreau registered dog, I would be willing to pay to have him registered in our Town....These are just a few of my thought and hoping that a dog park will become a reality. Unfortunately, I still work 50 hours a week and any volunteer time would be very limited. Thanks."

S.C., Hudson Falls - "I think a dog park would. I moved to Hudson Falls I used to take my lab to a dog park in Saratoga and he loved it. There was a trail that you could walk as well as an open area to let the dogs run around. So we both got exercise. I've been waiting and hoping for something like this to happen for some time up here. I now live in a town house with no yard and the locations is tough for walking in anything but the summer and late fall. I would come to a dog park everyday if there was one!"
