As a responsible dog owner, there is alot that you can do to support creating a dog park in our community as well as preparing you and your dog for the dog park experience. With any privilege comes responsibility. And understanding appropriate dog park behavior is critical to the success of a dog park. There is a "plethora" of information on the internet about appropriate dog park behavior and etiquette. Please take the time to research the information provided on this website and other resources that you might find. (Please share them.) As the "The Dog Whisperer", Cesar Millan, advocates, a dog park SHOULD NOT be your dogs ONLY source of exercise and socialization. To make the dog park experience most positive and beneficial, your dog should be walked and exercised outside of the dog park as well as within. A dog coming to the dog park should be in control, in a good state of mind and be in a "calm submissive" state. Understanding your dogs temperament as well as understanding dog body language is critical to a creating a positive dog park experience for you, your dog and everyone at the dog park. YOU are responsible for your dogs behavior! As a responsible dog owner, it is YOUR responsibility to understand if your dog will "fit" into the dog park experience. Ask yourself "How will my dog behave with other dogs in a "free" environment?" Please take your responsibility seriously and become an educated, "calm-assertive", "pack leader". Please take the time to read resources and books like Cheryl Smith's book, Visiting the Dog Park. More to come on this topic...stay tuned. In the meantime, refer to these helpful resources.
